Our History

Our Philosophy

Fliss Dodd

ARTIST INSPIRATION
Kevala Ceramics and Fliss Dodd from ‘Udder’
What took place as a chance meeting, soon blossomed into a collaboration and the timing couldn’t be better. Kevala Ceramics and Fliss Dodd from ‘Udder have collaborated on their first collection with both functional and figurative pieces.
The ‘Dari Mana collection’ of bowls, coffee cups, creamers and boxes is inspired by travel and with this first range, it is the island of Bali that serves as our inspiration. Hand written places from Bali wrap around the pieces hoping to evoke a past memory and that connection of time and place shared from your days on this beautiful island. Indelible memories left with you from the people you meet, the places you visit and the food you eat. Every piece is hand thrown and then individually hand written. The functional pieces are finished using a combination of glazes.
All of these semi totemic figures have a place in Bali, either through culture or ceremony. The Poleng figure was created after being inspired by the Poleng cloth (the black and white check cloth) you see throughout Bali on statues, worn as a sarong for ceremony and wrapped around trees. Its symbolism between the good and bad (right and wrong) I have portrayed in my own style through the use of feathers, a mask and a glazed check pattern. The Owl is also adorned with feathers, both real and carved and the Cat is simply carved with many scraffito lines and left raw (unglazed) giving the surface another quality and texture. Ibu represents all the beautiful women of Bali, especially during ceremonies. As it still being finished, the details will have to be explained later!

Dimity Kidston

ARTIST INSPIRATION
Australian textile designer and weaver Dimity Kidston has brought her skills for producing unique and decorative tapestry to the art of ceramics. Dimity has a passion for objects, whether textile or ceramic, to be both beautiful and functional.
Her current work is inspired by traditional Balinese wood carving and batik, the bright, colourful designs are carved on to the clay using a scraffito technique. The motifs she uses in her ceramics are naïve, bold and contemporary. A hand-made aesthetic is central to her work, and as each piece is individually carved, no two pieces are the same.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Dimity Kidston has had a long association with decorative objects and art. Growing up in a creative family in rural Australia her passion for beauty and form was nurtured from an early age.
She studied textiles and ceramics at the Australian National University, where her interest in traditional weaving and tapestry was further developed. In 199? she completed her Honours year at the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee, Scotland – a centre of excellence for traditional weaving.

Gilly Beal

ARTIST INSPIRATION
Gilly Beal, a former Bali resident, wanted to capture a design element from the island she loves so much in her ceramics. She always admired the craftsmanship inherent in the traditional Bali Aga baskets – that take months to make and feature a fine, even weave. Taking these as her inspiration, she has created a series of ceramic pieces that pay homage to the beauty of the baskets. Each piece is individually made by hand and is therefore unique, and each design comes in a limited edition of 50.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Singapore-based artist Gilly Beal studied art in London at Kensington & Chelsea College and the Slade. Her work typically makes reference to the 25 years she has spent living in Asia. She often takes traditional techniques and materials and adds a contemporary, Western-influenced spin.

The space casually reflects a cool tropical yet rural setting and an old world Asian charm. A distinct Old French Vietnam charm fills the interior, provincial and yet slightly urbanized. The original façade has been stripped back to reveal a softened concrete color with beautiful wooden shutters- reminiscent of traditional French town housing drenched by the Asian sun.
