The Munduk Moding Plantation Story :
MMP and our coffee plantation are run by a 100% Balinese team. While we strive for top notch service, we elected to develop the resort sensitively in unison with the local villages and draw on international experts to help coach the team and train our trainers. Today, our team comprises some 150 colleagues, solidifying MMP as a strong supporter of the local economy. In this way, MMP demonstrates to the people of the area that sustainable tourism is in their interest, creates employment and prosperity, respects the local culture, and helps promote a better environment.
In this mission, we were helped by the local villages and Bali’s own star architects Popo Danes and Era Anastasia who designed the resort. Many guests have stepped forward over the years and helped MMP to implement this vision – some advised on sustainable agriculture, others produced maps, and nearly all our guests have given honest feedback, which we try to implement as much as possible.
As owners, we meet up with our Indonesian team regularly at the Plantation – our close contact has strengthened our bonds and friendship which are at the heart of Munduk Moding Plantation. We have seen families being formed, children born and people spreading their wings as they take on new responsibilities – this has been a tremendously enriching experience for all of us.

Our Journey Together
Our story began in 2007, amidst the breathtaking beauty of Munduk’s hill country. Enchanted by its natural wonders and inspired by a chance meeting with a local hospitality graduate, we embarked on a journey to create something truly special. A five-hectare abandoned coffee plantation became Munduk Moding Plantation, a haven of tranquility and sustainable luxury. Learn more about our vision, our collaborations with local artisans and architects, and our commitment to the community.
When we met Gede Uliadnyana – now the General Manager of the Resort, then a budding local graduate from a hospitality college with whom we clicked immediately – we realized that this was the chance of a lifetime. We had always wanted to create something of beauty that would further economic development in the South and be a genuinely positive force for all those involved. This was it. Gede helped us find an abandoned five hectares of coffee plantation with some of the best views of the Island and wild open nature all around. We bought it, mortgaged our house in Europe to finance the investment, and never looked back.
In the process, we were helped by many people in setting up the resort: local villagers who trusted us and came to work for us, guests who provided advice and feedback as well as Bali’s own star architect Popo Danes who created the initial design of the resort. Largely built with local workers, MMP opened in 2009 with just a handful of villas as foreseen by Popo’s master plan – a very low density to maximize privacy and protect the environment. We have stuck to this vision as the team gained experience and the plantation prospered.
Popo’s former associate – Era Anastasia – took over as our chief architect some years ago. Together, we revived ancient building techniques, erecting a Bamboo Community Hall, a unique Bamboo Spa, and a front office that have won universal admiration.
With the help of friends, we established Munduk Coffee, a company that exports coffee from our rejuvenated plantation. We also founded the Munduk Foundation to support the local community. The past 15 years have been incredibly enriching and we are very proud to share this beauty with our guests.

At Munduk Moding Plantation, we have been deeply committed to the future of our local community since our inception. Through the Munduk Foundation, we actively support local initiatives in our community. Our management team, consisting entirely of local residents, is deeply aware of and empathetic to the unique challenges facing our community.
We strive to preserve the integrity of local lifestyles and cultures. By actively engaging with the community, we ensure that our initiatives are aligned with their concerns and needs, contributing to their overall well-being.

The Munduk Foundation was first established in 2010 by Munduk Moding Plantation (MMP) the only boutique hotel located on an active coffee plantation in Bali. It began as a small, informal initiative to give back to the local community. This effort was rooted in MMP’s founding philosophy: to bring high-end tourism to a lesser-known part of the island while safeguarding the environment,
supporting hotel staff, and uplifting the surrounding communities.
As MMP grew in popularity, the Foundation’s reach also expanded, enabling it to support a wider range of community-focused activities. In 2017, with the added support of Munduk Coffee an Indonesian Dutch company producing specialty coffee in the region the informal foundation was formally registered as an Indonesian Yayasan (Deed of Establishment No. 4, dated 27 September 2016). Its
board of directors is made up of representatives from both MMP’s management team and Munduk Coffee.
The Foundation is managed by staff from MMP and Munduk Coffee, who also provide all funding and facilities at MMP’s plantation in Gobleg, Singaraja, Buleleng, Bali. Collaboration with the local villages is central to its work, involving close coordination with village leaders, Banjar (ward) heads, and traditional Adat authorities. These partners play an important role in reviewing planned activities
and selecting beneficiaries, such as students and community members receiving social support.

We’re continually striving to improve our hotel’s efficiency and minimize our environmental impact. As one of Bali’s earliest Green Globe members, we collaborate with leading green networks such as The Punch Community and KemBali Becik. We were honored to receive the Gold Eco Climate Badge from Eco Tourism Bali in both 2025 and 2026, recognizing our continued commitment to sustainable tourism.
Our goal is to achieve carbon neutrality in our operations. We’ve engaged our staff in this process and are excited to share our journey with our guests, inviting them to participate in our sustainability initiatives.
Some of our key focus areas include:
- Water Conservation
We prioritize water conservation by collecting rainwater to meet a significant portion of our needs. Additionally, our Ecological Waste Water Treatment Facility (EWWTF) processes all wastewater, producing clean water that can be used to irrigate our Plantation. - Waste Management
We prioritize waste reduction and recycling. All waste is carefully sorted, with organic waste composted on-site and used to fertilize our plantation. We have banned single-use plastics and actively process plastic, used paper, and used cooking oil to create items like candles, photo frames, and hotel amenities.Our Waste Bank or Bank Sampah program encourages collecting and segregating solid waste from the local community. This initiative not only helps clean up the environment, but also provides income for local residents, supports local artists and craftsmen, and transforms plastic waste into valuable new products. Guests are invited to participate in workshops to learn more about our recycling efforts. - Energy
We prioritize energy efficiency. We operate the largest solar electricity facility in our region and are actively exploring the feasibility of a micro-hydro plant. Regular energy audits and efficiency initiatives have enabled us to reduce our energy consumption despite our growth. Our goal is to reduce energy consumption by 5% annually. - Environmental Awareness
At MMP, our staff is trained in environmental management principles, and our Sustainability Manager promotes sustainability initiatives throughout our operations. Our Green Team actively engages with the local community including schools, inviting them to collaborate on green initiatives such as regular cleanups of nearby lakes and waterfalls. - Guest Participation
Join us in our sustainability efforts! We offer a variety of workshops, including candle making, soap making, and handicrafts. Your feedback is valuable to us, so please share your suggestions on how we can further improve our practices. - Accountability
Our commitment to sustainability is unwavering. Our Green Team
Our Green Team actively collaborates with the local community to address environmental challenges. Initiatives include cleaning up nearby waterfalls and lakes, remediating illegal trash dumps, and distributing waste bins to the local village to promote improved waste sorting and processing.
To preserve the natural beauty and protect the water tables, the Green Team contributes 1,000 trees to the community each year. We believe that meaningful actions, combined with traditional Balinese ceremonies, can cultivate a mindset of care, love, and appreciation for Mother Nature. These ceremonies, deeply rooted in Balinese culture, serve as a tangible expression of our connection to the natural world.
Reforestation – Plant Your Own Tree

Inspired by the Balinese philosophy of Tri Hita Karana, we seek harmony between well-being, the environment, and cultural heritage. Discover our sustainable initiatives and join us in preserving this balance.
At MMP, we strive for truly sustainable tourism that is economically, socially, and environmentally responsible. To share our sustainability practices with our guests, we offer a variety of workshops that provide firsthand experience of how we integrate these principles into our daily operations.
The majority of our workshops are held in our Soap Tree Workshop Hall, a structure constructed in part from recycled materials. The colorful concrete columns feature recycled plastic plates made in our Plastic Recycling Center, and the workshop tiles are made from recycled glass and cement.
- Candle Making from used Cooking Oil
The candles adorning our restaurant tables are the result of one of our sustainability initiatives. Our candle-making workshop teaches you how to create candles using recycled cooking oil, a material that is harmful to the environment if not disposed of properly. - Bamboo Straw Making
Plastic waste, with its slow decomposition rate, is a major contributor to environmental pollution, including soil and sea contamination. To reduce our reliance on plastic, we’ve adopted eco-friendly bamboo straws for our F&B operations. In addition to providing bamboo straws to our guests, we offer workshops where you can create your own personalized bamboo straws. - Used Paper Handicraft Workshop
Discover the art of upcycling paper waste into beautiful handicrafts like photo frames and bokor (Balinese offering containers). - Soap Making from Used Cooking Oil

This restaurant is dedicated to celebrating Balinese cuisine and offers a selection of Balinese specialties, with an emphasis on typical North Bali dishes. The vast majority of ingredients come from our own vegetable and spice gardens which you can visit on the complimentary Plantation Walk every morning. The cuisine of North Bali relies heavily on the abundance of vegetables which are typically blanched, preserving their taste as well as their antioxidants and is naturally quite healthy. There are many different
Sambals to provide a bit of spice and twist to the dishes – some of these are very spicy but most have very subtle flavors. The degree of spiciness is indicated on the menu.
In Bali, meals are typically enjoyed with family or a group of friends and consist of a number of dishes which are shared. We would therefore, encourage you to order a few dishes for your party, together with rice or fries and a selection of Sambals. These will all be served together in small pots while each of you will have individual plates so that you can all try a bit of everything. Desserts can be ordered separately. To facilitate matters, we offer a North Bali Sampler which consists of some of our own favorites. Our waiters will be very happy to assist you in selecting your meal and advising you on the dishes.

MUNDUK COFFEE
Organic Bali Coffee Plantation
Immerse yourself in the aromatic world of our on-site specialty coffee producer, Munduk Coffee where we cultivate the finest coffees in North Bali, offering guests a unique opportunity to witness the complete ‘bean to cup’ journey. Hand-picked with meticulous care when the cherries reach their deepest crimson hue, our harvest typically spans July to September, yielding just a few tones of exquisite beans. Roots –
Munduk Organic Coffee Plantation was established by a Balinese and European partnership with the goal of reviving high-quality coffee production in Bali’s central hills region. By doing so, we aim to generate sustainable incomes for farmers, protect the environment, support the local community, and produce exceptional coffees.

Environment
Coffee offers several environmental advantages over other cash crops. The shade trees necessary to protect coffee plants act as small reservoirs, conserving water and preventing soil erosion during the rainy season. This in turn attracts insects and birdlife, contributing to the rich biodiversity on our Plantation. Organic coffee farming in Bali is a sustainable practice that does not deplete the land. Unlike cash crops like oranges, flowers, or cloves, coffee can be cultivated in the same location for many decades.
Microclimate
Nestled at approximately 1,200 meters above sea level, MMP’s microclimate is ideal for coffee cultivation, introduced to the region by the Dutch in the 19th century. We continue to cultivate descendants of the coffee trees reportedly from Sulawesi. Historical records from Dutch times indicate large-scale coffee production in the area. Until the 1980’s, the hill stations of Gobleg and Munduk were renowned as the island’s most productive coffee-growing regions. After harvest, coffee beans were transported to lower altitude villages on horseback or dried by farmers in open fields.
Reviving Coffee Culture
The dramatic decline in coffee prices in the 1990’s led many farmers to abandon coffee cultivation in favor of more lucrative cash crops. This shift resulted in soil erosion and falling water tables. At MMP, we’ve been advocating for coffee cultivation among our neighbors, emphasizing its long-term benefits for the region and its population. We work with our partners to grow organic coffee, secure better prices, and streamline the production chain to ensure farmers receive a fairer share of the revenue. While coffee farming requires patience, with trees taking ~3 years to bear fruit, we believe that rising international prices and active support from local leadership will enable our partners to succeed. A portion of the revenue from our coffee sales is channeled back to the Gobleg and Munduk communities through our Munduk Foundation, which supports local projects and community development initiatives.

All the coffee you enjoy at MMP is homegrown. Indulge in our various organic coffees made from our Munduk Arabica beans, crafted through different processing techniques. Our Espresso Blend, sourced entirely from Bali, is a perfect foundation for cappuccinos, macchiatos, and lattes.
