Bali Governor, Wayan Koster, announced a new regulation banning single use plastic last week at a conference press in his Denpasar office. Accompanied by Governor Vice, Cok Ace, and Regional Secretary, Dewa Indra, he explained that the regulation is to help preserve Bali as a green, beautiful and clean environment.

“There are three plastic materials that are banned: plastic bags, polystyrene (Styrofoam), and plastic straws,” he said. He also said that every manufacturer, distributor, supplier and business that uses those plastic materials must produce, distribute, supply, and provide substitution to those disposable plastics.

Koster is targeting that plastic waste will be drop 60-70 percent by next year, even with a six month tolerance period.

“Even though we have given six months to fully implement this ban, there is a possibility we can proceed with it faster,” he added. Koster asked all the community to follow the regulation and apply it in their daily lives.

Meanwhile, parts of the community showed their support to the new regulation. When tribunnews.com interviewed several clothes store owners and buyers in Badung market, they said that they supported the new regulation. “I do agree with it. It would be good if we can reduce the plastic waste. I know it will be started with the supermarkets and I will prepare and buy the substitute bag. If the customers don’t bring any shopping bag, they must purchase them.  But, if they have understood, I think they will prepare it themselves,” said Kadek Widanti, 33, a clothes store owner.

“I will support the new regulation to reduce the plastic waste. I have read it on the placards already. Bali will be cleaner and there will be no plastic waste in the future,” said Sari Agustina, 40, a clothes buyer. “I still don’t know the regulation. I will bring my own shopping bag then. I support all of the government programs. The regulation is good and I hope it can reduce the plastic waste,” said Yunita, another Badung market visitor.
